James Levy

James (Jim) E. Levy, 82, passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2021 after a long battle with colon cancer. He was born in Jamaica, N.Y. on November 3, 1938 to James and Eleanor Levy (Meyer). Jim married Mary Ann Guillem on April 13, 1958 and raised their family in Inwood, where they met as children. Jim worked for many years at J. Levy and Sons Moving and Storage Company, founded by his father, followed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority from where he retired in May 2007 after 18 years of service. In 1959, he joined the Inwood Fire Department and served his community for over 60 years. He served two terms as Fire Chief, 1967-1968 and was elected Fire Commissioner in 1970. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Eleanor. Jim leaves behind many loving family members including his wife, Mary Ann, daughters Arlene Kline (Gary), Alicia Campanile (Michael), and Amy Horbach (Jim); grandchildren Heather Gottlieb, Holly Gottlieb, Penny Chevalley, Jason Kline, Jessica Campanile, Michael Campanile, Christopher Campanile, Shane Chavatte, Mackenzie Neglia, his sisters Nancy McClellan (Dave), Carol Artusa (Mike) and brother, Allen Levy (Eleanor) and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to viewing hours on Friday, April 16 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Meserole Five Towns Funeral Home, 143 Lord Ave. Inwood, N.Y. 11096 and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Inwood Fire Department, 188 Doughty Blvd. Inwood, N.Y. 11096. A private firematic service will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Social distancing and face masks are required. Online remembrances may be made at www.meserolefivetownsfh.com . In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the James Levy Memorial Fund, which will be focused on firefighter training and development.
